Name-Dropping celebrities to get ahead in the idustry has been done for decades. Products are likely to sell if a celebrity endorsers a certain product. The problem is that such a mention creates an implied endorsement. In many cases, the celebrity never used the product. Lawsuits have been filed in cases such as this, where the celebrity and her lawyer sue these companies for using their name without permission. It is called a cease and desist motion. Actresses like Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez have filed this kind of lawsuit before because someone was name dropping them in a PR effort to help with business. Make sure to get permission before ever name dropping a celebrity. If you do happen to get permission your product is pretty much guarenteed to sell, that’s for sure.

Touugh luck for non profits

I recently read in an article that many non profit organizations are increasingly altering their communication strategies and tactics to counter the effects of the recession. Obviously, being a non profit organization, they rely on donations and help from other people. Because the economy has gone down many people are reluctant to give their money to these organizations. This is a great oppurtunity for PR professionals to show their skills and talent. The dwindling economy has provided a big challenge for the PR field to work with. Now is the time for public relations people to get out there and put their skills to work. Because the economy is so bad right now, non profit organizations will need to take a different approach to solving their problems.

RadioShack has just announced its new campaign to begin Aug 6. This new campaign called “The Shack” is a new branding idea that RadioShack has come up with. Lee Applbaum, RadioShack’s Chief Marketing Officer said, “This is not about changing our name. Rather, we’re contemporizing the way we want people to think about our brand. THE SHACK speaks to consumers in a fresh, new voice and distinctive creative look that reinforces RadioShack’s authority in innovative products, leading brands and knowledgeable, helpful associates.” Radio Shack is partnering with T-mobile as its wireless carrier. They are also partnering with Lance Armstrong to sponsor his cycling team and also work with his foundation and LIVESTRONG campaign for the fight against cancer. Radio Shack is very excited to have Lance on board because they believe he brings an excitement to the brand. Radio Shack plans to launch a PR function nn New York called Netogether. “Netogether will feature live music, celebrity appearances and unique contests to demonstrate how technology can keep people connected – even 3,000 miles apart.” I believe the idea of changing their brand will bring new light to their company. I am actually not very familiar with Radio Shack, I don’t think I have ever been in one, but with this new campaign it may make me want to pop on in one and see what they’ve got.

The first chapter in Groundswell talks about the effects of social media. Social media is so effective and so powerful that the creater of Digg.com went against the advice of his business partners and told his “fans” that he would not delete any comments containing a certain code and he would just deal with the consequences. I mean, he risked his job and his career because of the pressure he was receiving from fans on different social media outlets. This just shows how much social media has grown and what kind of effect it is having on people and businesses. Social media is becoming such a big part of the corporate world. I believe that in the next few years if people do not have a knowledge of how social networking works, their job options will be severely limited. This social media frenzy is growing at an exponential rate and not only in the PR field, but in every field. SO people need to be prepared.
